Keys that cannot be duplicated

Security Restrictions On Some Keys

Restrictions are imposed by some manufactures to reduce unauthorised key duplication.

To address the fact that knowing keys can be easily duplicated, key manufacturers implemented certain key duplication restrictions into their products that reduces illegal key duplication and gives you peace of mind.

One way they do this is by restricting the amount of blank keys they issue. By doing this, a manufacturer can create a safe and controlled amount of blank keys for sales and distribution.

Key patents restrict other manufacturers from producing unlawful key blanks.

When looking for a car locksmith Dublin can come up with an array of professional locksmiths. Here at Fogarty locksmiths, you will be required to provide an ID if the key has a restricted key blank. This ensures the highest level of security is maintained.

Some manufactures have gone ahead and put small computer chips, magnets, different combinations of metal, or some have even disallowed duplication all together.

“Do not duplicate (DND) keys”

Mechanism manufacturers sometimes use a simple technique to avoid key duplication. This involves creating “Do Not Duplicate” (DND) keys. These keys are stamped with a “do not duplicate” imprint on the key surface.

A professional locksmith will always get in contact with the manufacturer who originally made the key to assess if they should duplicate or not. However, while this mechanism is supposed to discourage key duplication, the unauthorized copying of DND keys is still a security problem.

Keys which have electronic components or movable mechanisms present upon the key blank offers the best security and are difficult or impossible to duplicate.

How are keys cut?

Professional locksmiths will have an array of special machines to cut the type of key you need. The machine they use will depend on the type of key, and intricacy required. A locksmith’s experience and gained knowledge is important in ensuring a high standard of quality work.

  • The specific design of the original key is matched to a new blank key of the same type.
  • Whatever the machine chosen by the locksmith, it will shave the metal on the blank key.
  • The original key is used as a template, and the shaving continues until both keys are identical.

Types of Key Cutting Machines

Key cutting can machines be Manual, Automatic, Laser or code.

Standard house keys are created using a manual key cutting machine. The blank and original key are clamped one on top of the other. The locksmith manually shaves metal from the blank key guided by the pattern of the original key onto the blank key. Both keys should be identical once finished.

Automatic machines are more expensive but much faster than the manual machines. The blank and original keys are clamped independently. Using a stylus, the machine traces the pattern of the original key onto the blank key at and shaves the metal to that pattern.

Laser key cutting machines are similar to the automatic machines. They use a laser to cut the blank key rather than a blade or bit. Many modern key systems require 3D impressions on key surfaces to increase security. Laser machines are able to provide copies of these when needed.

Code machines produce a key pattern according to a code manually entered or scanned from a card. Once the code is inserted and understood. The machine will create the pattern on a blank key.

Door Locks Dublin : How do locks work?

1 Pin and Tumbler Mechanism

The pin-and-tumbler locking mechanism is a simple and commonly found locking device. It is made up from a series of spring-loaded pins. These are housed in a series of small cylinders along the . Each cylinder contains a bottom part, called a pin, and a top part, called a driver. The key when inserted will push the pins into the chamber, this compresses the spring and pushes the driver into the upper chambers of the cylinder.

When the matching key is placed in the lock; both pins will align at the shear line. The shear line is the space between these pins, around a track the same shape as the chamber..

Once the drivers and pins are aligned, the shear line has no obstructions and the key will turn. When the key is removed from the lock, all pins descend and rest into the cylinder. The bottom pins rest in the key chamber. An incorrect key will misalign one or more of the spring-loaded locking cylinders. This blocks the key from turning by keeping one or more of the pins or drivers in the way, obstructing the shear line.

2 Tubular Locks

The tubular lock is the most common type of locking mechanism. Most interior doors are designed to accommodate the installation of tubular locks. They are most commonly used for bathrooms, bedrooms and other interior doors. Tubular locks are equipped either with a key tumbler lock on the outside knob of the door or with a push button or turn button on the inside knob.

3 Mortise Locks

A mortise lock fits into a groove, known as the mortise, cut into the door. The lock case is then fitted into the mortise. Mortise locks can have two locking mechanisms built into the lock case: the latch-bolt or the deadbolt.

4 Rim Locks

A rim lock are commonly found attached to the interior surface of a front door. A latch is used to unlock the door from the inside. The exterior door surface is unlocked using a smaller sized rim with a pin and tumbler mechanism.

5 Mechanical Locks

Most locks used on exterior doors are mechanical locks. Mechanical locks operate via a combination metal tumblers, levers, or latches which fall into a slot in the bolt. This prevents it from being moved. Most mechanical locks require the insertion of a key to open the lock. The matching key serrations, that raise the metal pieces will allow the bolt to move.

6 Electronic Locks

Electronic locks use a code signalled electric current to operate. Electric locks can be mounted directly to the lock, which allows access by a combination code, magnetic card or a key.

So now you know how the 6 most common types of lock mechanisms operate. If you ever find yourself in need of a locksmith for commercial or residential needs, you can contact us here.
